LaCROSSE HAMS

Net Script/Format

Good evening and welcome to the LaCrosse Area FM activity net. This is WV9E transmitting from Onalaska every Thursday nite at this time. The purpose of this net is to create activity on 2 meter simplex and the VHF/UHF bands in general. To assist newly licensed hams and to provide a friendly atmosphere where new operators can get some mic time. One nite a week where area hams can get on the air and catch up on local ham activities and events. All licensed amateurs are welcome to join the net at any time. I will now start asking for check-ins, if you are a new caller please give me your first name and remember to check out when you leave so someone doesn't ask you a question when you are not here. This is WV9E, please call now:

Basic Purpose of this net

The main purpose of this informal net is to activate 2 meters, to create interest in Amateur Radio in general and VHF Operation in particular. To give new operators a place where they can find friendly and/or experienced amateurs to ask questions or just get some mic time and learn operating proceedures. Discover that using only a limited outlay in money and/or materials it is pretty easy to be successful on VHF w/out a repeater. Ultimately increasing VHF and above operation in our area and perhaps some will find that WEAK SIGNAL WORK is really fun. My bias aside..

I believe that assisting local area amateurs/hams, whether in upgrading licenses, getting to know the local ham community, asking for a simple signal report or telling the group about a latest project or antenna should be the focus. No question is foolish except the one not asked.

I would like to get to the point where others will step in and "run" the net if I am not able. Nothing bugs me more than to find that a certain activity has been cancelled but I didn't know. I will try to arrange someone if I can for those times, update this page to reflect the change but if I am not here , don't wait for anyone to call CQ on frequency. Grab the mic and say "this is wv9e(your call ofcourse), anyone around tonite"? or something.

I may at times change operating locations. Head up the bluff w/ a vertical, or call the net from some other hams QTH. I will use different radios and/or antennas sometimes, as last minute hurry up or experimental operating is a key part to ham radio. Everyone should feel empowered to try new operating locations. This helps us to discover the area coverage map for 2 meter simplex and can be fun at the same time. Mostly just get on the air.

SSB & CW on VHF Plus

While FM is the mode of this net, using vertical antennas, I would ultimately wish those that enjoy this mode give SSB or CW a try w/ a horizontal antenna. As I have said before, in email sent prior, that the Wednesday nite 144.240 ssb net can be heard and worked with a pretty simple set up, antenna wise. The net control operator is in EN54 and has alot of power, thus we had one area operator, N9ETD with a vertical antenna a mere 8 feet above ground check in. This proves I think that a wire dipole, or cheap yagi (see link to right) are good for atleast some contacts in our region of the tri-state. Slowly add equipment, more transmit power, better yagi and a pre-amp Once you have some of the basic equipment a whole new world opens up, satellites, EME and meteor scatter on many days of the month and as the spring approaches Es and Troposphere Ducts allow 1000 mile contacts. One duct on 2 meters and you will see first hand how I got hooked on the stuff.
